The method of isolated anther culture in vitro is one of the promising biotechnological approaches in breeding research of agricultural crops. The main problem that reduces the effectiveness of this method and its widespread introduction into breeding practice is the low responsiveness of inoculated anthers. In this regard, questions devoted to understanding the mechanisms underlying the replacement of the development program by haploid cells in the anther are relevant and practically significant, which is especially true for economically valuable cereals. The aim of this article is to analyze the works devoted to the study of various factors affecting the responsiveness of cereal anthers cultivated in vitro and to assess the current state of affairs in this area of research. It should be noted that there are no unified terms in publications on the analyzed topic, so we will use the terms given in [Kruglova, 2009].
