Plant cell wall is the first level of defense in protecting plants from phytopathogens. However, to pass this barrier, phytopathogens produce enzymes that destroy the cell wall of plants. In this regard, the aim of this work is to characterize the features of the buffer-extractable polysaccharide fraction from the cell wall of plants. As an object for research, we chose a model pathosystem that included the phytopathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium atrosepticum SCRI1043 and potato as a host plant. To characterize the polysaccharide modifications, the methods of fractionation of carbohydrate polymers and their analysis using gel filtration were used, as well as the determination of the monosaccharide composition using anion exchange chromatography. In P. atrosepticum infected potato plants, the content of polysaccharides and fragments of ramnogalacturonan I in the bufferextractable fraction increased in comparison with control plants.
