The review article analyzes the literature and own data devoted to study of the phenomenon of two pathways of morphogenesis in one callus in in vitro culture conditions, namely the pathways of organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. Particular attention is paid to the issues of realization of the morphogenic potency of callus cells due to the pluripotency property (during organogenesis in vitro) and totipotency property (during somatic embryogenesis in vitro). The concepts presented in the literature that can be applied in this field of research are analyzed. The prospects of using this phenomenon in biotechnological developments related to the targeted production of regenerants of economically valuable plants are discussed.
