The conservation of biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems is a complex problem; it cannot be effectively solved only at the level of species, populations and communities in isolation from their habitat, the main component of which in terrestrial ecosystems is the soil as a living space for organisms as well as a link of all components physico-chemical and trophic relationships. In terrestrial ecosystems, soils and organisms living in (and on) them function in an evolutionary and environmentally determined spatio-temporal unity, forming a system of “diversity (types, properties) of soils <-> biodiversity”, which was formed during their longterm co-evolution. Conceptually shows the manifestation of this relationship at various hierarchical levels of the structure-functional organization of ecosystems: evolutionary succession, ESP (elementary soil processes), zonal geographic, landscape, biogeocenotic, soil-type, horizontal-longline, geochemical, and soil fertility level. Arguments are given. Anthropogenesis of terrestrial ecosystems leads to disruption of harmonious relationships between the soil and biocenoses, worsens biodiversity. The effect of changing soil properties on biodiversity during agricultural use of land, erosion, land improvement, oil pollution, and mining disturbances are considered. It is argued that the ecosystem approach is needed in solving the problem of biodiversity conservation in unity with soil conservation.
